SJ and LP

In the running argument over which pair- SJ or LP- should be regarded as the greatest composers of Hindi film tunes, I rest my argument on the fact that our father's collection had more tunes of SJ than of LP. Father did have Parasmani, but his collection of SJ included Kanhaiya, Kat putli, Begunah, and Sangam..

Okay - Father had no LP records other than Parasmani. Perhaps LP and SJ composed equally good songs.

But, (and this is speaking only of myself) LP's songs have a unique way of moving me deeply and viscerally. Especially their songs for Lataji.

SJ's songs is Teesri Kasam are fine, but I often wonder what LP could have produced in that classic film...what depths and heights they would have carried Lata's voice to depict the loneliness of the characters...

I give a few links here of LP numbers, a few among so many many masterpieces. Hope you will listen to them.

1) Aaj dil pe koi - (raga Charukeshi)
This song of Lata is so powerful, tears spring to my eyes involuntarily...
Watch when she sings:
bas yahi soch ke ham bade chain se
doob jaane lage the magar ro pade

2) Ram kare aisa ho jaye
Mukesh personally rated this one as his best song. And I have to agree - it is a heartbreaking number.

3) Tum gagan ke chandrama ho
Critics hold this to be the finest duet of Lata and Manna Dey. (raga Yaman Kalyan)

5) Jind le gaya
I played this Lata masterpiece to Mother many many years ago and I remember we were both dissolving in tears at the value of the song and the poignancy of the lyrics. An immortal melody on the immortal Smita Patil. Remind me sometime to explain the lyrics to you.
