a Director's cut...

I remember listening to music with father and all of us sitting in the family room sofas. While we discussed music, most of the arguments were about Kishore and Rafi and Hemanta and Lata and other singers. I do not remember many discussions about composers. While I did pay attention to the composers it is only much later that I could understand the importance of composers in the creation of music. Today, listening to Ilayaraja composing a Hindi tune, I realized how limited my appreciation of the genius of those composers was.

"Kaun Dagar, Kaun Sheher"

I am emailing you this Lataji-Ilayaraja song - a perennial classic, and one that received heavy critical acclaim.

Even though she had sung for him in Telugu and Tamil, this was Lata's first Hindi song for him, in the 2001 movie Lajja.

The music for this Ilayaraja composition was conducted by Laslov Kovach of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra and performed by Budapest Symphony Orchestra.

Lyrics by Prasoon Joshi.
